New machine cuts outsourcing By SAM POTTS.enduro 006

A new addition to The Steel Framing Company in Mudgee means they can now produce house frames and trusses completely in-house at their factory.

The local business have installed their ENDURO rollformer and are producing house frames and trusses for local construction.
The rollformer is like a factory assembly line, the data is entered into the machine's software, the flat sheet of steel enters and is shaped, cut and pre-drills the required holes.

The finished part rolls out the other end complete with ink jet markings identifying each individual part of the frame or truss.
When the parts arrive at the construction site they just need to be bolted together.

Co-owner Kerry Bennett said that the business had previously used a SUPRACADD software system which required them to source parts but with the new system they are now "more cost competitive". "The beauty of it is that we can now do everything in house," he said. "We used to have to get our roof trusses from Queensland and our studs and plates from Ballarat in Victoria. So it saves on transport and helps put our pricing on par with timber."enduro 001

Mr Bennett, a carpenter by trade, has been building with steel frames since 1980.
He said that he originally made the switch to steel because "it's termite-proof, doesn't buckle, stays straight and is uniform in strength".
